About the Contact Consortium and CONTACT
If you were impressed by the vision in books like Neuromancer and Snowcrash then you would have been as surprised as we were to see something like AlphaWorld appear so soon! We formed the Contact Consortium in April of 1995 to provide a forum about newly emerging culture and contact in digital space. We have attracted members from many diverse backgrounds, including: anthropologists, space scientists, writers, artists, computer scientists, engineers, business people, students, musicians and just normal folks!
We evolved from CONTACT: Cultures of the Imagination, a fifteen year old organization dedicated to cultural challenges posed by a possible human contact with an alien intelligence (or contact with humans we may see as very different). We share some membership and this web site with CONTACT.
We recently participated in 24 hours in Cyberspace, assisting them to include inhabited virtual worlds (including AlphaWorld) in their project. We will be presenting a paper at the ACM SIGCHI CHI96 conference in Vancouver in April titled: Inhabited Digital Spaces. This will be the first time technologies like AlphaWorld have been seen at a major academic conference.
The Consortium warmly welcomes new members who are very excited (or deeply disturbed) by the implications of this technology for human society. We hold on-line forums, brainstorming sessions and will hold a Symposium on March 8, 1996 in San Jose California on the theme of Contact in Digital Space. In addition, we have started to build an experimental community in AlphaWorld called Sherwood Forest.

CALL FOR STANDUPS
Hello, I'm building an outdoor comedy emporium at 59n, 216e in the Loch Ness area. I'm putting in some web humor links, have built a stage and environs; and hope to offer open-mike comedy for a hour or so on a Friday or Saturday night. I'd emcee. To make it work I'll need some volunteers for the first show or two. Hopefully it would generate its own wannabee comics from the audience and word of mouth after a couple of shows. Two or three minutes of any sort of material, original or borrowed, will be all that is required.
No stage fright, just drag your little avatar down there and type out a few gags-- you could even disappear if you had to, call it magic. Kind of a mixture of Karaoke and ventriloquism. No off-color stuff of course, the audience being of indeterminate age and gender. Lots of potential for topical humor and fun: from Prophetess, "Take my avatar . . . please!," and from Toast, "How many avatars does it take to screw in a lightbulb." So if you have the urge, the whim, and the guts--or if you can drink a couple of glasses of wine and still type in your jokes--please e-mail me. These avatars look like they could use a laugh.
